Love Bites #10

A weekly-ish list of things I love and what’s going on with me.

The first link I have to share today is ridiculously old. It’s from 2006! That’s like, BT (before Twitter)…but let me tell you why I’m sharing it:

You guys, I am now a runner.

I know! I didn’t see it coming either! I have tried to run a few times in my life, and every time I did I thought it was something I should do, like brushing my teeth (but like, brushing with a tire-iron)…I would grit my teeth and do it even though it hurt and I hated it. Eventually, I would decide I loved myself too much to submit myself to so much torture.

That was, until Listen Up, Maggots.

Something about that post just clicked in my head, and I have started running three times a week. Super-slow, with Z in the stroller. So slow I’m like a pantomime of a person running. But something about that post gave me the permission to truly go slow enough for my body and what do you know? Running is fun!

(Also? It’s so powerful to see how hearing the right thing, in the right way for us can inspire us to make huge changes in our lives.)

Have I mentioned how much I love mason jars? I love them, in all sizes, from 8 oz to half-gallon. From condiments to smoothies to grains, there’s nothing that’s not better in a mason jar as far as I’m concerned. So I loved this: Who Made That Mason Jar?

And finally, fermentation. I heard this story on the radio a few weeks ago and ever since then I’ve been obsessed with getting fermented foods into our diets. Bonzai Aphrodite also has a great series here. So far I am loving kombucha, vinegar, and miso, but I know I have so much to explore. (I’m not adventurous enough for sauerkraut or kimchi and I have never liked pickles.) Any suggestions? What’s your favorite fermented food?

Favorite fermented food: fish sauce! You will hesitate when you get a whiff of the stinky smell in the bottle, but just a few drops adds salt and umami to pretty much everything. Fish sauce!

Hurray for running! I’m trying to find some kind of exercise routine that works for me. This middle-aged middle of mine has gotten a little out of hand.

That aside, an even bigger hurray for this thing you said: “hearing the right thing, in the right way…” that’s a big thought. That’s something I think the world needs more appreciation for, and more empathy for all of us who have something we want to do or become, but haven’t found that inspiration (or maybe it’s permission) of someone saying the right thing in the right way.

what?! no sauerkraut! put it on a hot dog or a brat (faux meat!) on a bun and add mustard and ketchup. Am I from Wisconsin or what?!

p.s. ok. I just read the Maggots post. that’s not funny because that might actually make a runner out of me and I’m not a runner. But. Nine months ago I wouldn’t have called myself a baker either. So….we’ll see.
