Raw Update #1

by eileen on February 22, 2010

I didn’t think I was going to write about this, because I kind of hate when people talk about their diets. But my experiments in Raw eating have definitely crossed over into Life Beyond Food, so here goes.

(yes, that’s some kind of electrical meter in the bottom corner, on our kitchen counter next to the produce–hey at least it matches the color scheme!)

Raw Food became this minor brain-obsession of mine for most of December. I knew I was a goner when I ended up ordering like eighty-jillion books about raw foods off of Amazon (my surest sign of infatuation.)

Eating Raw just makes sense to me, in an instinctual way. A way that other diets or food philosophies or what-have-you never have.

Of course, while I buy in spiritually and intellectually, I still didn’t think I could actually do it.

My main problem was that I am an insanely picky eater. I don’t really enjoy slimy things, weird textures, or cold things. (Basically, hi, I like bread and cheese. Preferably together, with a little bit of red sauce.)

I figured I would last about twenty minutes. But instead–to my great surprise–I began a gradual shift toward eating mainly raw foods.

I can’t even believe I’m going to write this but
for the past two months I have been eating raw for most of the day, and many days even including dinner.

How is this happening?

First, all hail the green smoothie! Seriously, this is like the most magical food. (Green for Life by Victoria Boutenko is an amazing book about how to use green smoothies as a gateway drug to raw foods.)

Second, I really appreciate the approach Natalia Rose advocates in The Raw Food Detox Diet. Basically, her philosophy is don’t sweat the small stuff, and above all don’t push yourself too far too fast. (Btw while I do recommend the book for the great information, I have issues with some of her language, including multiple references to the concept of a “perfect” body.)

And again with the peace and calmness!

I’m finding it everywhere. The spikes in my mood (and perception of myself and my abilities) are smoothing out. I’m finding ease where there used to be struggle. I’m holding things loosely. It turns out the cliffs of insanity are just cute little stage sets, I can’t believe I ever thought they could be real.

Partly it’s because of my sailboat. But another part of it is because I feel deeply nourished for the first time in years, free from jangly toxins, and that gives me a sense of calmness in my entire body.

So yeah. I’m not making any proclamations or pronouncements. Just recording my experience, here at the beginning. I’ve dipped my toe in, and the water feels nice.

I just might take a swim.

Comment Zen: I’d love to hear about your own experiments with finding what works for you, especially if you have experiences with or questions about raw foods. But I really don’t want to debate specific food choices. As we all know, People Vary.

I’m glad eating raw is going well. Yay!

I’ve considered it myself a few times. But I always manage to talk myself out of it for a million difference reasons.

What I really loved in this post was the way you’re approaching this. No proclamations or pronouncements. The dipping-in-of-toes.

In the past, I’ve gone all kooky with food choices. Which has never really worked.

So I really appreciate the way you’re doing this. And that you shared it. Thanks.

Wow, I, too, love the lack of pronouncements. (Sorry if that’s a pronouncement.)
I’m a total bread-and-cheese person. And now you’re telling me this is something you’re actually enjoying? Mmmm… And there are no excuses since I live in California. I’m going to think about thinking about trying this for one meal. That’s about as far as I can go right now. Thank you for writing about this! I needed to hear it from a fellow breadandcheeserian.

You have such a relaxed attitude about this! I’ve read a little on it but I got turned off by all the rules and proclamations. Right now the Green Smoothie has me interested because I’ve been turned on by the idea of juicing and raw foods is part of that whole scene. So thank you for sharing how this is going for you and the way you’re doing it. Way cool and it helps me be less afraid.

Oh it does! It does indeed look gorgeous.
I hope you haven’t finished it, I’m coming round.

I agree with you regarding the green smoothie- amazing!

I was listening to an interview with Tim Van Orden who is a raw foodie and a runner and he mentioned not overwhelming yourself by jumping in. He suggests adding a raw vegetable or fruit to your meals one at a time until there is no room for the “other stuff.” In case you want to give a listen, http://rawkinradio.com/2008/09/16/revvell-interviews-raw-athlete-tim-van-orden-pt-2/

Good luck on your journey to emptiness!

I notice that my body does not love cold foods, particularly in winter. It’s kind of interesting. That being said, I do love green smoothies. I tried to get my coworkers fired up on them .. not so much love. One told me that he might be interested if he were a cow. (This was before I learned that if you blend the fruit all together before you add the greens, it’s less green.)

What a great time to read this post–while eating a bowl of fruit salad and going through my google reader :)

I’ve been craving raw food for the last few weeks (thoughts of Spring cleaning maybe?) and have been gradually upping my raw food intake. I’m hitting two raw meals on some days, maybe a couple of pieces of fruit on others, and I love it.

The green smoothie sounds really interesting.

I’ve been vegetarian on and off for a number of years but went back to eating meat (and anything else really, woops) about a year ago after the combination of vego-diet and a stressful job caused me to lose thirty pounds really quickly. Scary.

I really love your approach to this, it seems smart not to make dietary pronouncements. That can be a bit of a set-up for future disappointment and isn’t eating healthily difficult enough these days?

Thanks for writing about this.

Yum!! It’s awesome to watch you dip your toes in, as Fabeku nicely described it! :) I love love love your attitude too, you are truly a soul sleuth my dear!

I’m so glad it’s going well and that you’re immersing yourself in it. And the dressing looks divine on your salad, hence the yumminess.

Let me know if you need any help along the way, I’m here for ya.
